How many times can one keyword be used on a page?

We have worked with many clients and one of the most often question asked by our customers is what is the maximum number of times we can use a given keyword in the content of the webpage.

Since writing the actual content is the website owners task as they best understand their product, we only suggest the keywords that they should include in the content of the webpage. We suggest that the keywords be used as naturally as possible.

Although no written rules are available it is advisable that it is reasonable to assume that the optimum keyword density should be in the range of 8% to 15%. A too high keyword density may be considered as spam and will likely penalize the site  for that particular keyword. A keyword density too low, may lead to non optimal performance on search engine for that particular keyword.

The Keyword density is calculated with the following formula

Keyword Density = (M / N) * 100

where

M = Number of the occurrences of the  given keyword.
N = Total Number of occurrence of words in the given text.

As an example in this page  the total number of words is 309 and the number of the occurrence of the keyword “density” is 7. As a result the keyword density for “density” is (7/309)*100 = 2.2%.

Next time you need to write a content, make sure you try to include the keyword suggested by your SEO firm as many time as possible and ensure that it does not exceed the limit.
